Church of the Redeemer is hosting a silent auction to benefit Sonrise School in Musanze, Rwanda, which educates some of the neediest children in the country, carefully cultivating and equipping the next generation of leaders. Our partnership with Sonrise School, facilitated by Mustard Seed Project, continues to be vital to the health and wellbeing of the students, even as they are crucial to the future of their country.
In 1994, after the country of Rwanda was torn by terrible genocide, there was nothing left to sustain its populace and certainly no infrastructure to serve the approximately 400,000 children left as orphans. Soon after the genocide, local leaders—along with friends from the United States, including Church of the Redeemer—began to prepare for the establishing of Sonrise School, and the school opened in 2001. The children who came had been traumatized in ways we have difficulty imagining, many of them orphaned by the genocide or HIV/AIDS. Sonrise became the lifeline of hope for a future rescued from the jaws of death, disease and hatred. Each year the school has grown and has twice achieved the rank of Rwanda’s #1 school, based on national test results. Through our annual benefit for Sonrise School, we contribute to this ongoing investment in the future of Rwanda’s children.
